Giant Sicilian Radish (Raphanus sativus)
Giant Sicilian Radish (Raphanus sativus): this traditional radish comes straight from Sicily. It can reach up to 6cm of diameter, it is rustic and has a short cultivation cycle.
It can be planted up to October. The harvest for summer consumption can be done around 1 month after the sow. Whereas in autumn, with lower temperatures, it should be done after two months. If the root stays on the ground for too long it hardens, and gets spicier. Its main advantage lies in its tender pulp and large size, which slows the hardening down.
For seeds production, it will be necessary to wait for the spring after the first sow. You can cultivate some plants in a sufficiently large pot with sowing soil, to be able to shelter it during winter and collect the seeds once it has passed.
