Brunswick Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. alba)
Brunswick Cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. alba): heirloom German variety, rustic and resistant to intense cold. Great in the kitchen, it allows for countless preparations.
Cultivation is easy, but, if grown in spring, constant irrigation and fresh exposure are required. It can be grown all year but we recommend summer sowing for a winter harvesting, this way cultivation is more sustainable, and it saves you any issues regarding pests, or other varieties.
It is ready in 90 days from transplant. It does better in well-fertilized soils. To get the seeds it will be necessary to wait until the spring after sowing.
In the second half of the 19th century, it was the most cultivated cabbage in the US, to where it was imported from Germany in 1824.
It gradually vanished until it almost disappeared.
