Carolina Cross 180 Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus)
Carolina Cross Watermelon (Citrullus lanatus): with this variety we have granted ourselves a license, this is certainly not a sustainable variety, it needs water and fertile soil, plus lots of care, howevert it awakes great botanical interest, and we like it. It easily exceeds 100 kg and although it's edible, it is certainly not cultivated because of taste. To have fun in the garden, a challenge to refine cultivation techniques, and why not, draw attention to more sustainable issues. It can be cultivated all over Italy, but it needs long and warm summers to give its best. It should be cultivated in a well worked and fertilized soil, with irrigation adapted to the size of the species. The planting space should be 2x2mt, allow only one fruit per plant if you aim for the maximum size, trim to optimise growth, reduce irrigation in the days before harvest of the ripe fruit.
